About this item
WW2 RAF B-type flying helmet - Sz2 - FRANK BRYAN - 1939. A good used example of the iconic B-type helmet. As used and worn by aircrew and pilots during the early years of WW2.
This helmet is in good used condition; the exterior leather is not bad at all, all things considered. The leather is still soft and supple, with no holes or tears, but with some light surface cracking. Please see the photos. The chinstrap and buckle are again without issues; the rear adjustment strap is missing part of the buckle, but often, as seen, it has been threaded through the Bennett buckle. Both zip ear zips are in good functioning condition, running up and down fine. The left side zip ear does have some cracking to the leather, and looks to have had some repair at some point. You can still get into the zip ear, and the leather is not about to disintegrate. Inside the zip ears, we find both original rubber earphone holders, both in good condition. The zip ears are fitted out with original A.M.-marked foam ear pads; however, these are somewhat "crispy" now, but original to the helmet.
Moving inside, the chamois is soiled from use and does have a small area of damage near the brow area; a small hole is present. The helmet is still with the original manufacturer's label. Manufactured by "FRANK BRYAN LIMITED, LONDON & WORCESTER". Size marked as a 2, and also dated 1939 with stores reference number 22C/65. We estimate the size to be around a size 55-56 UK hat size. Both ear pads are in good condition.
Overall, a good displayable B-type helmet. It would display very nicely with a pair of goggles and an oxygen mask! A lovely piece for any WW2 RAF collection, museum, or display!
