About this item
WW2 RAF B-type flying helmet - Sz2 - FRANK BRYAN - 1939. A really nice example of the iconic B-type helmet. As used and worn by aircrew and pilots during the early years of WW2.
This helmet is in very good condition overall; the exterior leather is in lovely condition, all things considered. There is minimal loss to the brown finish, and the leather is very nice, still soft and supple. The leather with no holes, tears, or damage to the leather, we can see. The chinstrap and buckle again without issues, as is the rear adjustment strap.
Both zips are in good functioning condition, running up and down freely. Both zip ears are also faintly stamped with large A.M. crown stamps, and stores reference numbers 22C/66. Inside the zip ears, we find both original earphone holders, both in good condition, currently fitted out with gosport receivers. These can, however, be removed to fit a set of electric reievers. Finally, the zip ears are fitted out with original A.M.-marked foam ear pads; however, these are somewhat "crispy" now, but original to the helmet.
Moving inside, the chamois is very lightly soiled from use but is in very good condition. The helmet is still with the original manufacturer's label. Manufactured by "FRANK BRYAN LIMITED, LONDON & WORCESTER". Size marked as a 2, and also dated 1939 with stores reference number 22C/65. The helmet is also nicely named with the following written by hand ink: "SHAW. R 931*** - B FLIGHT NO4". Some information is somewhat illegible, but nicely marked, and possibly scope for further research here with these details. We estimate the size to be around a size 56-57 UK hat size. Both ear pads are in good condition.
Overall, a very clean, displayable B-type helmet. It would display very nicely with a pair of goggles and an oxygen mask! A lovely piece for any WW2 RAF collection, museum, or display!
