About this item
WW2 RAF B-type flying helmet. A good example of the iconic B-type helmet. As used and worn by aircrew and pilots during the early years of WW2.
This helmet is in pretty good condition overall, the exterior leather is in good condition all things considered. There is minimal loss to the brown finish, and the leather is a tad dry but it is still soft and supple. The leather with no holes, tears, or damage to the leather, we can see. To the exterior, we can see a faint stores reference number stamp 22C/65 just below one of the zip-ears. The chinstrap and buckle again without issues, as is the rear adjustment strap.
Both zips are in good functioning condition, running up and down freely. Both zip ears are also nicely stamped with large A.M. crown stamps and stores reference numbers 22C/66. Inside the zip ears, we find both original earphone holders, both in good condition. Finally, the zip ears fitted out with original broad A.M. marked foam ear pads.
Moving inside, the chamois is soiled from use but is in pretty good condition. The helmet is still with the original manufacturer's label. Manufactured by "WAREINGS (NORTHHAMPTON) LTD ST. JAMES ST NORTHAMPTON". Size marked as a 2, and also dated 1937. We estimate the size to be around a size 56-57 UK hat size. The label also has a handwritten name, which looks to be "McNamer" but we are unfortunately not able to read clearly the last few letters, however, there is also a service number written above which is 625083. So possible scope for further research. Both ear pads are in good condition too, albeit one does appear to have a period repair, not immediately noticeable.
Overall a very displayable B-type helmet. It would display very nicely with a pair of goggles and an oxygen mask! A lovely piece for any WW2 RAF collection, museum, or display!
