About this item

WW2 RAF B-type flying helmet & G-type oxygen mask set. A good example of the iconic B-type helmet, modified for use with the later G-type oxygen mask. As used and worn by aircrew and pilots during the early years of WW2.

This B-type helmet is in good condition overall; the exterior leather is in good condition, all things considered. There is minimal loss to the brown finish, and the leather is very nice, still soft and supple. The leather with no holes, tears, or damage to the leather that we can see. The chinstrap and buckle again without issues, as is the rear adjustment strap. The helmet has been modified for use with the later G-type oxygen mask; it has had the original 4 press studs removed and 4 then added. These are closer together, which allow for the attachment of the oxygen mask hook and the press studs of the G-type mask.

Both zip ears are also nicely stamped with large A.M. crown stamps and stores reference numbers 22C/66. With both zips in good functioning condition, running up and down freely. Finally, the zip ears are fitted out with original A.M. crown-marked foam ear pads.

Moving inside, the chamois is soiled from use but is in good condition. The helmet is still with the original Air Ministry label, Size marked as a 3. Also named, written in pen is the name "MILNE - W" with possible service number "1958721", so possibly scope for some research here. The ear donuts also in good condition, with original bakelite earphone holders also in place. Stamped to the exterior of the helmet with stores reference number 22C/65. We estimate the size to be around a size 57 UK hat size.

Fitted to the helmet is a well-used but intact G-type oxygen mask. The mask has some losses and has a lot of cracking, and crazing to the edges. Unfortunately, the nose wire is absent, and the 3 tabs have breaks in all of them. However, the harness retaining wire is in place. Inside, the mask is still fitted with a nice chamois lining. The bottom of the mask is marked with A.M, size medium, and stores reference number 6D/644. When displayed with the helmet, it really is not too bad. Again fitted with a good used external loom, complete with receivers, jack plug, and type-25 microphone. No issues to report, completing a nice set.

Overall, a good, clean, displayable B-type helmet set. It would display very nicely with a pair of goggles! A lovely piece for any WW2 RAF collection, museum, or display!
