About this item
WW2 RAF - Early E-TYPE OXYGEN MASK. As used and worn by pilots and aircrew from 1941 onwards, this being the early configuration with leather straps, not to be confused with the later modified E*-type mask with elasticated straps. These early E-type masks are very rare to find now, as these masks were removed from service in 1943 and reissued as microphone carriers or modified to E*-type configuration. An original E-type mask is a rare find indeed; however, this is an even earlier version, and has a different leather strap arrangement, using 2 leather "handle" fittings, which are mounted to the mask via studs. From these "handles" are then attached the leather straps. The latter version of the E-type mask has leather straps which attach directly to a metal ring around the microphone.
This example is in overall excellent condition and is a rare survivor of the early E-type oxygen mask. The mask is complete with leather straps, a correct early narrow oxygen hose, and an external wiring loom. The mask's rubber itself is still very soft and malleable, with little cracking we can see, some around the microphone, which is not unusual to see on wartime masks. The mask is marked around the bottom edge with a yellow A.M. stamp and stores reference number 6D/473. Inside the mask is lined with a chamois strip around the edge, again in good, lightly soiled condition.
As mentioned, the early E-type mask was fitted with leather straps, which proved to be inadequate and caused the mask to slip on the wearer's face. The straps here are in good condition without issue or damage we can see. The bennet buckle on the right strap is in good condition as well, again also fully marked with yellow ink stamps, A.M. 6D/473 and marked E. The mask is fitted with the correct earlier narrow oxygen hose, which is again in good condition without cracking or damage. Complete with the original brass bayonet connector at the end.
The mask is wired with the correct external wiring loom, microphone, earphones, impedance switch and jack plug. Once again, all in good condition without damage.
Overall, a very nice example of this very rare early oxygen mask, the rarity of which cannot be understated. We have had more D-type oxygen masks than complete original E-type oxygen masks! A fantastic mask that would grace any RAF museum, collection, or display.
