About this item
WW2 RAF G-TYPE OXYGEN MASK & HEATER - Sz Small. A well-aged example of the ever-popular and desirable G-type oxygen masks. As issued to RAF and Commonwealth aircrew during WW2. This example, however, is fitted with the rare oxygen mask heater, designed to stop the microphone from freezing up at altitude and in the more exposed positions. Often associated with Air gunner use.
An aged example of the iconic RAF G-type oxygen mask. The rubber of the mask is soft and pliable, but it does have some issues. There are losses to the edges of the mask, with several areas of heavy cracking and some crazing. There is also some cracking around the edges and the usual stress points of the nose, nose wire, and harness retaining wire; these are to be expected in 80-year-old rubber, however. The nose wire and harness retaining wire are both in place, with all the small rubber tabs with the usual surface cracking. The elasticated harness is again well aged and is now well stretched, with only minimal elastication left. However, it is complete with hook and press stud attachments, fully adjustable without any issues we can see. The mask is fitted with a Type-48 microphone, without major issues or damage, again some wear to the paint and some crazing to the rubber ring of the microphone. Inside, the mask has a soiled chamois lining showing light wear and use. The bottom side of the mask is marked with A.M. in the rubber moulding and marked as a size "SMALL".
As mentioned, the mask is fitted with the very rare mask heater. This heater was issued and used in conjunction with an electrically heated suit. The mask heater was designed to stop the wearer's oxygen mask, and importantly, the valves, from freezing shut due to excess moisture from breathing. This heater was designed and issued mainly to air gunners, who were in their more exposed and colder gun turrets.
This example of the mask heater is in good condition without any issues we can see, no damage to the cable, still soft and supple. Complete with plug, fully A.M. crown marked with details, the mask heater itself also marked with stores reference number 6D/909 and broad arrow. This heater is clipped onto the back of the Type-25/48 microphone found in the mask.
Overall, a good mask that would display well with a flying helmet. Ideal for any RAF museum, collection, or display.
