This dried machine skimmed milk was rationed and produced for Allied troops and civilians, particularly in Britain, to combat food shortages due to rationing.

This is a 1940s, unopened, cylindrical tin of dried skimmed milk for British domestic consumption, made in the U.S.A., with stars and stripes design on a paper label. The label is red, white and blue.

From 1942 onward, fresh milk was rationed to three pints per person per week. Dried powdered milk, like dried powdered egg, was permitted as a supplement on the ration specifically to assist with the healthy development of babies and young children. The Ministry of Food, who were responsible for managing food supply and rationing, produced their own dried milk powder, fortified with vitamins for this purpose.

This would be an excellent piece for a wartime display or collection. This is an unusual size. These tins are usually produced in longer thinner cans.
