About this item
The first I have ever encountered; the 1914 Grand Cross of the Iron Cross was a decoration intended for victorious generals of the Prussian Army and its allies. It was the second highest class of the Iron Cross, following the Star of the Grand Cross of the Iron Cross, which was awarded only twice.
Along with the Iron Cross 1st and 2nd Class, the Grand Cross was founded on 10 March 1813, during the Napoleonic Wars. It was renewed in 1870 for the Franco-Prussian War and again in 1914 for World War I.
Twice the size of the Iron Cross it was worn from a ribbon around the neck.
This superb example is mounted on a length of original 1914 Grand Cross ribbon, together with a full length ribbon, the suspension ring stamped 925. This and similar Grand Crosses were made for display during the period 1914-1918.
The frame is of two piece construction with a magnetic core. Weight with ribbon loop 23.8 gr., width 58.5 mm. I have shown an Iron Cross Second Class in one of the images for comparisson
Overall condition is very good.
An extremely rare and desirable piece.
