About this item
A fantastic original 1940s sheepskin leather waistcoat which is in excellent condition.
This garment started life as a pair of Royal Air Force issue sheepskin flying trousers. In the latter part of the war a huge number of RAF sheepskin trousers were dismantled for parts and re-purposed to make jackets. This waistcoat is clearly made from a pair of trousers, as is evident by the telltale holes where the braces have been removed (picture 9). Whether this was made for the military during WW2 or the civilian market just post war is unclear.
The front of the waistcoat fastens with a 'D.O.T' branded zipper, as was often used on RAF clothing during WW2. This is most likely also recycled and is fitted to the garment off centre which gives the jacket an asymmetric look. At the bottom of the waistcoat there is a large brass buckle and leather belt, again repurposed from the brace straps of a pair of flying trousers. An elastic waistband is fitted and is typical of those seen on 1940s jackets.
The jacket will suit a 38" chest and when laid flat it measures -
Chest - 21"
Shoulders - 17"
Length at rear - 24"
The jacket is in excellent condition for its age with only very limited signs of wear or use. Overall it displays extremely well with no notable flaws or damage bubt please take time to study the pictures and bear in mind that it is a vintage, pre-owned item which may have small flaws commensurate with age.
A fantastic piece of utility outerwear from the 1940s.
