About this item
A rare original British Army 'Smock, Windproof Camouflage' dating from 1943 which is a size No. 3.
This pattern of smock was introduced in 1943 and saw widespread issue during 1944 and 1945 with a variety of units. Based on the same design as the earlier denim, drab and snow smocks; these camouflaged examples also proved popular in the post-war period and were used by French forces amongst others.
The smock is made from a lightweight gabardine which has the camouflaged pattern screen printed onto it. It features four patch pockets at the front which all fasten (save for one green coloured period replacement) with brown coloured vegetable ivory (plastic) buttons which is typical of 1943 manufactured items. There is a hood which fastens with a drawstring and a larger drawstring is fitted to the bottom hem. The sleeves feature reinforcing patches made from the same material as the rest of the smock and there are adjustable tabs and buttons located to each cuff. The smock was converted in the early 1970s with a two way 'Clix' branded zipper. These smocks were still acquired by military personnel in the post-war period and more often than not had a zip added in this manner. The rear has also been crudely tailored to make it more fitted in the body and it appears that the hood has also been scaled down.
Inside the smock the original label is still present and is still mostly legible. It bears the title of 'Smock Windproof' below which is the size of 3. The maker's name of 'Prices Tailors Ltd Proprietors of The Fifty Shilling Tailor' is also present as is the 1943 date and the War Department broad arrow marking.
When laid flat the smock measures -
Chest - 26"
Inside arm - 19 1/2"
Outside arm - 20"
Shoulders - 25 1/2"
Length at rear - 28"
The smock is in good condition overall and displays very well. It is still very wearable with no serious flaws or damage. There is some limited wear etc and there are two field repairs to the rear towards the bottom (picture 17) There is another repair to the left sleeve (picture 16) and another very small repair to the rear panel (picture 17). The wear has been reflected in the price. Please take time to study these before purchasing and bear in mind that it is a vintage, used item which has some small issues commensurate with age.
An iconic piece of camouflage uniform and a must have for the serious collector!
This is a vintage item which is 'sold as seen'
