About this item
An original Royal Air Force officer's greatcoat which was made in 1945 and is a size No. 5.
This is the standard pattern of greatcoat worn by officers in the RAF from the pre-war period and all the way through the Second World War. It was replaced in the immediate post-war years with a new pattern. The coat is made from a heavy RAF blue coloured crombie cloth and features a full waist belt with brass buckle, a 3 button cuff with brass RAF buttons with more RAF buttons which fasten the front. The coat comes complete with a set of shoulder boards which are original to the coat and are a good match. They feature the rank of Flying officer and are secured with the correct brass King's crown buttons. What is particularly nice is that the flying officer rank braid has been stitched directly over the pilot officer rank, as illustrated in picture 7.
The interior of the coat is partially lined with rayon and the original throat latch is still present below the singular interior pocket. There is a hanging loop at the neck and the original label is present to the skirt. The label denotes the coat as an issue example, rather than the more commonly found private purchase examples. It bears the title of 'Coat, Great, R.A.F. Officer' below which is the size of 5. The maker's name of 'Sartor Mnfg Co' is also present, as is the War department broad arrow marking and the 1945 date.
The coat is a smaller size and will suit someone of around a 36" chest depending on desired fit and when laid flat measures -
Chest - 21"
Inside arm - 19"
Outside arm - 26 1/2"
Length - 47 1/2"
Shoulders - 18"
The condition of the coat is very good with some limited signs of wear and age. Overall it displays very well and looks to be totally wearable but please take time to study the pictures before purchasing and bear in mind that this is a vintage, pre-worn item which may have small flaws commensurate with age.
A very nice original example in great condition.
This is a vintage item which is 'sold as seen'
