About this item
A good original WW2 pattern RAF Ordinary Airman's Greatcoat which is in nice condition.
This pattern of greatcoat came into use with the RAF during the 1930s and saw use throughout the Second World War before being replaced by the 'New Pattern' greatcoat in the immediate post-war years. Whilst dated 1950, this coat is identical to those produced during the Second World War and is therefore a totally usable stand-in for a wartime dated example.
The greatcoat features the correct number of brass Kings crown RAF buttons and a matched pair of wartime embroidered RAF albatross badges are sewn to the top of each sleeve.
The coat also features the white blanket lining often associated with early production RAF greatcoats. The original owners service number has been added in black to the top of this which is a nice period feature.
Inside the coat still retains its original issue label which is clear and legible. It states the coat as being a size No. 3 which will fit someone of up to 5' 6" tall with a 33-35" chest and 30-32" waist. It was made by 'James Smith & Co' and bears the War Department broad arrow. The 1950 date and war department broad arrow marking are also present.
When laid flat the coat measures -
Chest - 20"
Inside arm - 17 1/2"
Outside arm - 25"
Shoulders - 16 1/2"
Length at rear - 42"
The condition of the coat is very good overall as can be seen in the pictures. There are no serious areas of wear or damage that I can see and on the whole the coat displays very nicely indeed. It is a vintage, pre-owned item however, so please take time to study the pictures before purchasing and bear in mind that it is a vintage item which may have small flaws commensurate with age.
Altogether a nice original wartime pattern greatcoat which is in very good condition.
This is a vintage item which is 'sold as seen'
