About this item

An original 1950s French Army hooded parka which is often referred to as the M47 pattern and is in good, used condition.

This pattern of parka was introduced by the French Army in the post-war period and saw extensive use throughout the late 1940s and into the 1950s, including during the conflicts in Indochina and Algeria. It is a classic example of utilitarian French military design, combining practicality with a distinctive appearance which has made these increasingly sought after today. The designation ‘M47’ is commonly used by collectors to describe this pattern and is widely accepted.

The parka is made from a khaki green cotton fabric which is hard wearing and offers good protection from the elements. It features an integral hood with a drawstring fitted around the mouth for adjustment. There are two angled chest pockets with button fastening flaps as well as two larger pockets to the lower front which also fasten with buttons. A drawstring waist is present which allows the garment to be cinched for fit and there is another drawstring fitted along the bottom hem. The cuffs are a simple barrel design whicih fasten with a button. The overall cut is generous, designed to be worn over other layers. The rear of the hood features a press stud fastening which allows it to be tightened and the letters 'US' have been added in black ink.

Inside, the parka is unlined as is typical for this pattern and the original maker's stamp is still present. The maker's name of 'J. Pauwels' of Merville is present. There is also a small crotch strap which can be fastened between the wearer's legs.

The garment will suit a range of sizes due to its loose, smock-style cut and when laid flat it measures -

Chest - 26 1/2"
Inside arm - 22 1/2"
Outside arm - 25"
Shoulders - 22 1/4"
Length at back - 39 1/2"

The parka is in good worn condition overall and displays well. It is still very wearable with no serious damage or flaws. There are however some areas of staining and signs of service wear which are illustrated in the pictures. Please take time to study the images before purchasing and bear in mind that this is a vintage, pre-worn item which will show issues commensurate with age.

A classic piece of post-war French military clothing which is in great condition.

This is a vintage item which is ‘sold as seen’
