Original 1950s French Army Officer's Macintosh Raincoat - Size 40

An original post-war French Army officer's raincoat which is a size 40.

This is the regulation waterproof coat produced for French Army officers during the post-war period. The design closely follows the style of the American military officer's raincoat, reflecting the considerable influence of American military clothing on French equipment during the years following the Second World War. This particular pattern is associated with the French Army of the Indochina and Algerian War periods.

Constructed from a waterproof olive green coloured gabardine fabric, the coat has a classic double-breasted front with a broad notched collar and large lapels. The shoulders are fitted with epaulettes and the sleeves have adjustable straps at the cuffs. Two large pockets are fitted to the lower front and a matching belt is worn around the waist, giving the coat the characteristic appearance of the American-style military raincoat from which the design was derived. The buttons are modelled on the US Army buttons and all of the original factory fitted examples are still present. The coat also features a fold-up throat latch which fastens with buttons and is again a direct copy of US military items from the Second World War. The rear has a generous cut which allows the wearer freedom of movement whilst the long length provides protection from the weather.

The coat retains its original French Army label to the interior which features two crossed French flags with the 'RF' emblem between them. The label is marked 'ARMÉE FRANÇAISE', 'IMPERMÉABLE REGLEMENTAIRE POUR OFFICIER' and 'PRODUCTION CHAUMONT PARIS'. The graphics used are typical of the period. 

The coat will suit around a 40" chest and when laid flat measures -

Chest - 24 1/2"
Inside arm - 23 1/2"
Outside arm - 25"
Shoulders - 18 1/2"
Length at rear - 45"

The coat is in good condition for its age with some signs of wear and use. There are some marks and some stains which are most notable around the folder of the collar. Overall it displays well and is totally wearable but please take time to study the pictures before purchasing and bear in mind that it is a vintage, pre-worn item that may have other small flaws commensurate with age.
