About this item
An original British Airborne Denison Smock which was made in 1954 by 'George Davis & Co'.
This pattern of smock was introduced in the immediate post-war years and is sometimes referred to as the 'third pattern' or the '1946 pattern' by collectors today. It is very similar in many ways to the wartime produced second pattern smocks. The main details which denote this as being a post-war smock are the knitted cuffs and the nickle plated 'Newey' branded press studs.
The smock features a screen printed camouflage pattern with a sand coloured background with reddish-brown and green brushstroke pattern. The collar is lined with a khaki green coloured wool shirting material and epaulettes are located to each shoulder. The fishtail is still present to the rear and looks to have been removed and refitted when the smock was altered. The smock has been slimmed down in the body when retailored as is evident in the pictures. A long 'Clic' branded zipper has also been fitted to the front and 1 Para DX flashes have been fitted toward the top of each sleeve. A US Army CBI patch has also been fitted above the left breast pocket. There are also two small tabs to each side which fasten with press studs and six more press studs to the front which the fishtail can be attached to. Replacement period knitted cuffs are fitted to the end of each sleeve and are in excellent condition.
Inside the smock the original label is still present and is bright and legible. It bears the title of 'Smocks Denison Airborne Troops' below which is the size of 6. The maker's name of 'George Davis & Co (M/c) Ltd' is present below which is the date of 1954 and the War Department broad arrow mark.
The smock is a large size which is designed to fit up to a 42" chest and when laid flat it measures -
Chest - 29 1/2"
Inside arm - 18 1/2"
Outside arm - 24 1/2"
Shoulders -
Length -
The smock is in good condition with some signs of wear and age. There are no serious flaws or damage and overall it displays well and is totally wearable. There are a couple of small holes to the right sleeve as illustrated in picture 11 and a couple more small holes to the right breast pocket as illustrated in picture 4. Please take time to study the pictures and bear in mind that this is a vintage, pre-owned item which may have small flaws commensurate with age.
A very nice original example in a larger size. Attached is a picture of the original owner wearing it.
This is a vintage item which is 'sold as seen'
