About this item
An original British Army 'Suit Snow Smock' dating from 1942 which is in good condition and has been overdyed a khaki tan colour.
These smocks saw issue with a variety of British units during the Second World War as well as US troops (including Airborne) in the Ardennes. This is the earlier, heavier pattern rather than the later lightweight examples made later in the War. This example has been overdyed a similar colour to the drab windproof smocks but offers a much heavier, harder wearing smock as it is made from thick cotton rather than gabardine. Whilst the original label is no longer present and there is no acceptance stamp visible, this smock was almost completely certainly made in 1942, as were all of the white examples.
The smock follows the standard design used on all British Windproof Suits during the Second World War and formed a set with the matching trousers listed separately. Made from a hard wearing cotton, the smock features four buttoning pockets to the front, a hood, a drawstring to the bottom edge and reinforcement sections to the sleeves. All the buttons are chocolate brown coloured vegetable ivory (plastic) examples which were prevalent on British military clothing during the mid-war period.
Inside the smock the original label is no longer present although there is clear evidence of where it was previously fitted.
Based on the measurements the smock would have originally been labeled as a size 3. When laid flat it measures -
Chest - 29"
Inside arm - 22 1/2"
Outside arm - 22 3/4"
Shoulders - 25"
Length - 32"
The smock is in good condition and is still very wearable with no real signs of wear or use. It is very clean with no staining or wear etc. There is a small area where the stitching has missed near the left breast pocket. This isn't really a flaw as it is structurally sound and is something that was done at the factory - It was good enough to be passed by the War Department inspector at the time! Please take time to study the pictures before purchasing and bear in mind that this is a vintage, pre-owned item which may have small flaws commensurate with age.
A nice example of this wartime pattern of smock which would make a good addition to any collection.
This is a vintage item which is 'sold as seen'
