About this item
An original United States Navy Anti-Gas Parka, often referred to as the 'Gunner's Smock', which is in good condition and dates from the Second World War.
This pattern of smock was initially produced in blue denim followed by this white cotton version. It was produced alongside a matching set of bib and brace and was designed as anti has clothing which would be worn over a uniform in conjunction with a gas mask. They saw issue on D-Day and period pictures show them in use with beach battalions and deck crews alike.
The smock is made from a white coloured cotton material . The hood is a large design which was intended to fit over the head when a gas mask and helmet were worn. It features a drawstring to the top which allows it to be tightened down around the head or equipment being worn. There is another drawstring fitted to the bottom hem and each cuff also features a drawstring for the same reason. Ties to each side of the neck which are intended to help tie the hood tightly around the gas mask to help seal it and stop any gas getting in. Two flapped patch pockets are located to the chest which is a notable detail of this pattern. The right pocket bears a small stitched line which indicates that this is a size 1.
The smock is as the smallest size produced and when laid flat it measures -
Chest - 25 1/2"
Inside arm - 21"
Outside arm - 25"
Shoulders - 20 3/4"
Length at rear - 26 1/2"
The smock is in good condition with some limited signs of wear and use. There is some limited staining etc but overall it displays well with no serious flaws or damage. Please take time to study the pictures before purchasing and bear in mind that it is a vintage, pre-worn item which may have small issues commensurate with age.
A nice original example of this hard to wartime pattern of smock.
This is a vintage item which is 'sold as seen'
