About this item

An original Second World War United States Army Air Forces D-2 Mechanic's Parka in very good condition.

The D-2 Parka was introduced by the United States Army Air Forces during the Second World War as part of a specialised cold weather clothing system intended for ground crews, mechanics and personnel servicing aircraft in extremely cold climates. Unlike the better-known B-series flying jackets which were worn by aircrew, the D-2 was designed for those working on the ground, providing exceptional warmth whilst allowing sufficient freedom of movement to carry out maintenance duties on exposed airfields. Produced in relatively limited numbers, original examples are considerably scarcer than contemporary flight jackets and are highly sought after by collectors today.

Constructed from olive drab coloured cotton windproof outer shell, the parka is fully lined with a thick brown alpaca and wool pile detachable lining which is secured in place with a series of press studs. It features an integral hood trimmed with genuine fur and fitted with adjustable drawcords to provide additional protection from wind and snow. There is a half-length opening to the front which fastens with an original 'Kwik' branded brass zip. Two large lower patch pockets with buttoned flaps provide generous storage whilst angled hand warmer pockets are positioned above them for comfort in cold conditions. Internal knitted wool storm cuffs are fitted inside each sleeve to prevent drafts and improve insulation.

Inside, the original black specification label is still present and remains legible. It reads 'Type D-2', Specification No. 44-3239-AF and lists the manufacturer as 'Aero Leather Clothing Co., Beacon, N.Y.'. The order number is shown as 42-1821-P. There is a separate size label which reads 'Large'.

The parka is a large size and when laid flat measures -

Chest - 27"
Inside arm - 23"
Outside arm - 25"
Shoulders - 24 1/2"
Length - 33"

The parka is in very good vintage condition and displays well. The outer shell remains strong throughout with only honest signs of age and service wear. The alpaca pile lining is full and retains excellent loft whilst the fur trim to the hood remains particularly attractive. There is an L-shaped repair to the bottom hem, as illustrated in the pictures, along with some staining and discolouration which is most noticeable towards the lower portion of the garment. None of this detracts significantly from its appearance or wearability. Please study the photographs before purchasing and bear in mind that this is a vintage item which may have small issues commensurate with age.

A rare and increasingly difficult to find Second World War USAAF cold weather parka which represents one of the most desirable pieces of American military clothing from the period. Original D-2 Parkas seldom appear for sale, particularly examples retaining their original detachable lining, clear specification label and attractive fur trimmed hood.
