About this item

A rare original 1944 dated Women's Auxiliary Air Force Greatcoat which is in good condition.

This pattern of greatcoat was produced for the ranks and was worn by members of the WAAF up to the rank of sergeant. It is made from a heavy blanket wool serge of the same type used for the men's greatcoat. It is dyed RAF blue-grey and features a double breasted front and flapped pockets to the hips. Brass Kings crown RAF buttons are fitted throughout.

The interior of the coat is lined with a white coloured blanket wool which is typical of early war RAF greatcoats. There is a hanging loop to the neck below which is a name tag which reads 'Fletcher Mathers'. The original label is also still present and reads 'Coats, Great, W.A.A.F.' below which is the size of 7. The maker's name of 'Leonard Klein Ltd' is also present, as is the 1944 date and the War Department broad arrow marking.

The coat is designed to fit a 37" - 38" bust and when laid flat it measures --

Chest - 19 1/2"
Inside arm - 16 1/2"
Outside arm - 23 1/2"
Shoulders - 15 1/2"
Length at rear - 42"

The coat is in good condition for its age with some signs of wear and use. There are a few small moth nips which are illustrated in the pictures as well as some wear to the cuff, again as illustrated. The lining also has some flaws but overall the coat displays well and is totally wearable. Please take time to study the pictures before purchasing and bear in mind that they are a vintage, pre-owned item which may have small flaws commensurate with age.

A good example of this rare pattern of ladies overcoat which has a clear wartime date.

This is a vintage item which is 'sold as seen'
