About this item

A very rare original French Army TAP 47 parachutist's smock which is clearly dated 1949 and was issued to the 3/1st Parachute Chasseur Regiment .

Following the end of the Second World War, the French military set about rebuilding. A new uniform was designed specifically for the parachute regiments being formed which included a jump jacket and matching trousers. The influence of the British Denison Smock and the US M1942 Jump Jacket which were used during the Second World War are clear. This is the first pattern of jump jacket to be produced by the French military and is now very rare to find.

The jacket is made from a flat khaki coloured cotton canvas material and features a zip front which is covered by a fly which fastens with buttons. The zip is an old replacement and not the factory fitted example. Four pockets are located to the front and the left breast pocket features a pen holder as well as a zip which is the original factory fitted example. Epaulettes are located to each shoulder and button tabs are fitted to each cuff. The rear of the smock features a large 'fishtail' crotch flap which can be fastened between the wearer's legs and is a direct copy of that used on the British Denison Smock. There are also two angled pockets to the rear which are a notable feature of this early pattern. There are also two buttoning tabs to the rear which are also specific to this early pattern.

Inside the smock the Lille maker's stamp is still present as is the date of 4-49 which denotes April 1949 as the month and year of manufacture. There is also a unit stamp inside which reads 3/1 R.C.P.

When laid flat the smock measures -

Chest- 29 1/2"
Inside arm - 18"
Outside arm - 22 1/2"
Shoulders - 20 1/2"
Length at rear - 28"

The smock is in good condition for its age with some signs of wear and use. Overall it displays well with no major flaws or damage. There are some small flaws which are illustrated in the pictures so please take time to study these before purchasing and bear in mind that it is a vintage, pre-worn item which may have small issues commensurate with age.

A very rare early French smock with loads of great details. Regimentally marked to a unit which fought in Indochina!

This is a vintage item which is 'sold as seen'
