About this item

A rare original 1944 dated British Army 'Coats, Duffle' which is in good condition and is a large size No. 4.

This jacket is made from a white coloured wool which is the same as that used for the Fear Naught jackets. This same heavy wool was used for the more common duffle coats which were longer and made in a fawn colour. The jacket is designed to be worn as an outer layer and is therefore cut in a loose manner. It features a short collar, two patch pockets to the front and fastens with three wooden toggles and rope loops.

Inside the coat the original label is still present and bears the title of 'Coats, Duffle' below which is the size of 4. The maker's initials of 'CWS Ltd' are also present and denote the maker as the Cooperative Wholesale Society - better known today as the 'Co-Op'. Also present is the War Department broad arrow and the date of 1944. There is also part of an issue stamp which reads 'MAR' and denotes the month of March.

The coat is cut in a wide manner so will fit a range of chest sizes, depending on desired fit. When laid flat it measures -

Chest - 29"
Inside arm - 22"
Outside arm - 26"
Shoulders - 21 1/2"
Length at rear - 33"

The coat is in good condition for its age with some limited signs of age. There are no serious flaws or damage and overall it is a very wearable jacket and it appears to be an unworn, deadstock example. There is some light staining, mainly to the rear, as illustrated in the pictures. There are blue marks in some places, such as can be seen next to the toggle fastening in picture 5. These are not stains but tailors chalk from the factory and were used when the coat was being made which would also suggest that it is an unworn example. Overall it is a very clean example and displays well but please take time to study the pictures before purchasing and bear in mind that this is a vintage, pre-worn item which may have small flaws commensurate with age.

A rare piece of British vintage military which is a genuine wartime issued example - These wartime coats are hard to find!

This is a vintage item which is 'sold as seen'
