A Scarce William IV Piquet Weight Sword

A Scarce William IV Pipeback Officers Sword. 

This is a very good example of a Piquet or Levee Officers sword, made during the reign of William IV (1830-37) It is a scaled down, lightweight version of the standard 1822 pattern infantry officers sword of the period. These swords were often taken on campaign, and were popular amongst those trained in fencing for their lightweight thrusting capabilities.

It has the regulation 1822 gilt brass hilt with folding guard, back strap and stepped pommel. The twistwire bound shagreen grips, are in quite good condition, with around 90%+ of the original covering intact. The hilt has no serious dings, dents nor deformation, and the folding guard retains its sping, and is ing good functional condition, and aligns well.

The 31.5 inch pipeback blade is etched with crown and foliage, although this is now quite faint. I can see no makers details. The blade terminates in a quill point. The blade and point have been service sharpened, and the blade has a very slight bend which is difficult to see with the naked eye.

The sword is housed in its original black leather scabbard with gilt brass mounts. There are no hanging rings, only a frog stud for wear on a cross belt, which is again correct for  this period. The scabbard is in good everall condition, very pliable, although it does have an old banded repair above the bottom mount.

A scarce sword, and only the second I have owned in 25+ years of collecting.
