About this item

Davisson's Nile Medal. 1st August 1798. Unamed as issued, in good condition.

This medal celebrated Nelson's Victory at the mouth of the Nile on 1st August 1798.

A personal award to all Officers and men present from Alexander Davisson, whose name and London address appears on the medal rim. " A tribute of regard from Alexr Davison Esq,St.Jame's Square."

Issued unamed and many recipients left them as so, others mounted them on ribbon.

It is noted that neither Sovereign or Parliament considered at the time, that this action merited a General award, and it was not until 1849 that any public award was granted. By then only 375 Officers and men who had taken part were still alive, or bothered to claim the clasp and medal.
