    About this item

An original 1939 pattern British Army leather basic ammunition pouch which is dated 1939.

This pattern of leather equipment was introduced in the early part of the Second World War alongside the 1937 pattern webbing equipment already in issue. It was intended to bolster the supply of the webbing version and saw issue with second line troops as well as the Home Guard. The pouch is made from a brown coloured grained leather and features a red fibre insert which keeps the pouch in shape. The lid fastens with a brass press stud and there are two loops to the rear to allow the pouch to be worn on the belt. The front strap which features the press stud has been moved up by half an inch to allow the pouch to house Sten Gun magazine. This denotes it as one of the pouches which was converted for use with the Home Guard during the mid-war period.

The rear loop still features the maker's stamp and part of the 1939 date is still legible as is the War Department broad arrow marking.

The pouch is in good condition and displays well. Please take time to study the pictures as this is a vintage item which may have small flaws commensurate with age.

A nice original item with a good early war date.
