About this item

A scarce and highly evocative late Victorian British Royal Navy Pattern 1888 boarding pike head, manufactured at the Royal Small Arms Factory, Enfield, and retaining a particularly desirable group of British military and naval markings.

The forged steel head features a long, narrow spear point with integral socket and twin extended langets, originally designed to run down either side of the wooden pike shaft and provide considerable additional strength.

Most importantly, the piece carries several identifiable British service markings, including:

EFD – denoting manufacture at the Royal Small Arms Factory, Enfield. British Broad Arrow – government ownership/acceptance mark. Crown over number / E – Enfield inspection/acceptance marking. Capital N – consistent with Naval ownership/issue.

Taken together, the construction and markings strongly support identification as a Royal Navy Pattern 1888 Boarding Pike, rather than a generic military spear or later Home Guard pike.

Historical Interest

The boarding pike has a history stretching back through the great age of fighting sail, when it was used by sailors both to repel enemy boarders and during offensive boarding actions.

Remarkably, the Royal Navy continued to retain pikes long after the introduction of modern breech-loading firearms. The Pattern 1888 represents one of the late developments of this traditional naval weapon and dates from an era when the Royal Navy was rapidly transitioning from the Victorian ironclad fleet towards the modern battleships of the early 20th century.

This surviving example is particularly interesting because the original wooden shaft has been lost, leaving the forged head, socket and unusually long twin langets exposed. This makes its method of construction especially easy to appreciate and creates an excellent display piece in its own right.

The combination of Enfield manufacture, government Broad Arrow, inspection stamp and Naval marking considerably enhances its appeal to collectors of British militaria and Royal Navy material.

Condition

In good, untouched condition for its age.

The steel displays an attractive dark aged patina with areas of surface oxidation, wear and marking consistent with a genuine service item of considerable age. The point remains present and well defined.

The original wooden shaft is absent, leaving the complete head and extended langets.

Importantly, the various EFD, Broad Arrow, Crown/E inspection and Naval markings remain discernible.

Please study the photographs carefully as these form an important part of the description.
