About this item

An original example of the second pattern Commando Bergen which is clearly dated 1944.

The bag section of this item is made from dark green waterproof canvas as opposed to the first pattern which was made from a light tan coloured material. This change in materials occured before D-day making it a usable item for any 1944 or 1945 scenario and this darker colour was prolific on DDay with Commando units. Like the first pattern bergens, this example has the two webbing straps which run around the circumference of the bag towards the top, which can just be seen below the main flap. It also retains the webbing blanket straps to the underside of the bag which are often missing. Three out of four of the 1/4" external side straps are also still present.

Inside the Bergen is dated 1944 and bears the maker's name of T. Ltd along with the War Department broad arrow.  A brass zip is present to the inner flap which features a rubberised reverse which shows some signs of age. The mouth of the bag features large brass eyelets through which a pull cord is still present which appears to be a replacement.

The bergen comes complete with its original black painted metal carry frame which is attached to webbing shoulder straps. The straps feature tabs to which utility pouches can be added. All the leatherwork on the frame appears to be intact and the frame bears a wartime date which which appears to read '44' and can just be seen in picture 5.

The condition of the Bergen is very good as can be seen in the photographs. It is a very clean example and displays well with some signs of wear and use. Please take time to study the pictures before purchasing and bear in mind that it is a vintage, pre-worn item which may have small issues commenusrate with age.

All in all, an excellent and very original example of a Commando Bergen clearly dated 1945. It would undoubtedly look fantastic in any WW2 display.

This is a vintage item which is 'sold as seen'
