About this item
An original Inter-War period British Army officer's map case which is in good condition.
During the First half of the 20th Century, officers serving in the British Army were expected to purchase their own equipment, including a map case. Many variations were offered from a variaty of different manufacturers; with this being one version.
The case is typical of the era being made from a khaki coloured rubbersied cotton. It is of bi-fold design and features a flap to the top which closes the case with white metal 'Newey' branded press studs. The interior features a celluloid section, behind which a map can be placed. This material allows for the use of chinagraph pencils to be used without marking the map.
The case is fitted with a shoulder strap which is typical of officers equipment from WW1 and the interwar period. It is made from cotton webbing and features a metal adjuster to lengthen or shorten the strap. Large brass buckles allow it to be fastened to the dee rings fitted to the top of the case.
The case is in good condition overall with some signs of use and age. The cotton canvas has a slight stiffness as is often the case with vintage items made from this material. Overall it displays well but please take time to study the pictures before purchasing and bear in mind that it is a vintage item which may have some other small flaws commensurate with age.
A classic example of an officers map case which would make a nice addition to any collection.
