About this item
An original private purchase British Army Officer's Holdall which belonged to 15927 Brigadier C H Montague O.B.E. who served with the Royal Tank Corps during the interwar period as well as during WW2 when it had become the Royal Tank regiment. He was the officer commanding 33rd Tank Brigade from December 1942 until March 1944 whilst they were operating Churchill tanks. I have not been able to uncover where he went in 1944 but the family believe he was part of the party which liberated Belsen concentration camp which suggests he was stationed in North West Europe following his transfer and the subsequent landings in France during 1944.
This holdall is typical of those purchased by officer's during the 1940s. It is made from a green coloured canvas and features leather piping and edging. Three leather straps fasten through metal buckles across the opening and there are two large leather belts which run around the circumference of the bag which also fasten with metal buckles. There are two rope filled leather carry handles, one positioned to each side. The base features metal studs as is common to find on this style of luggage. Underneath the main flap is a bi-fold opening similar to a gladstone bag. Brass fasteners are also present and can be secured with padlocks, if so desired.
The bag is in good condition with some signs of wear and age but overall it displays well with no serious flaws or damage. It is a vintage piece of luggage which has been used and therefore may have other small issues commensurate with age. Please take time to study the pictures before purchase.
A nice original WW2 bag which would make an excellent addition to any collection.
This is a vintage item which is 'sold as seen'
