About this item
A scarce original British Army rubberised map case which is clearly dated 1938.
This pattern of map case was produced in the inter-war period and saw extensive use with the British Expeditionary Force in France in 1939 and 1940. It is notable in numerous pictures from that period and was not produced after, being replaced with the standard webbing pattern.
The case features a khaki coloured rubberised cotton outer shell and both the front and back feature the same flap opening which is secured with three press studs. This reveals a plastic section which can have a map or similar fitted behind it. The side of the case features a zip opening which fastens with a 'Newey' branded zipper which is typical of the period. There are two nickel plated Dee rings to the top of the case which can have a strap fitted to them. Usually this would be the style also used for the officer's Sam Browne equipment.
Inside one of the flaps, the original maker's stamp is present and reads 'S. E. Norris & Co'. The 1938 date is also present.
The case is in good condition with no serious flaws or damage. The cotton canvas outer features a mottled pattern from age, as is commonly encountered and there is some limited corrosion to the metal D rings. Overall it displays well but please take time to study the pictures before purchasing.
A rare pattern of map case which would make a fine addition to a BEF collection or similar early war display.
This is a vintage item which is 'sold as seen'
