About this item
An extremely rare U-Boat Gyro Compass originally fitted at the Helmsman’s Position.
Manufactured by the firm of Anschutz the main body is in Bakelite with a domed base and a metal outer ring to the Compass face, the compass face itself in white. Roughly 270mm in overall diameter with a Compass face of 190mm these were fitted to the side wall above the two handles used by the Helmsman to steer the boat.
Overall condition is very good with no damage to the Bakelite body, a good clear Compass dial and unbroken glass.
Driven by the boat’s electrical system the dial does not rotate like a magnetic Compass until power is applied. It is complete with the power cable and connector plug.
This very piece is the one featured on page 42 of Gordon Williamson’s “U-Boats at War in 100 Objects” where he better describes their workings.
Very heavy piece weighing nearly 6.4kgs. Collection if preferred from the PO8 area of Hampshire near Petersfield.
