    About this item

For sale is a is a Post WW2 British army manual/ pamphlet titled:

“Artillery Training Volume III. Surface-to-Surface Artillery. Pamphlet No. 2. Technical Duties in Action”.   The preface and introduction states;   “PREFATORY NOTE    This pamphlet deals primarily with the technical application of artillery fire. Tactical and administrative matters are considered only in so far as they affect technical detail. The text is related more specifically to the 105mm Howitzer and the Plotter Fire Control than to other Surface-to-Surface Artillery equipments now in service. Nevertheless the subject matter is no less applicable. The introduction of mils and metres as the standard units of measurement has been anticipated. When necessary, an acceptable conversion may be made by accepting one degree as equivalent to twenty mils (1 mil = 3 minutes) and by not differentiating between yards and metres. Extracts from the Range tables for a hypothetical gun have been included at the end of this pamphlet. By reference to these extracts, it will be possible to follow more fully the working of the examples given in the text. On no account are these range table extracts to be used to find data for live firing.    INTRODUCTION This pamphlet is intended to explain and illustrate the gunnery methods and procedure required by Surface-to-Surface Artillery. The principles expressed are intended primarily to guide and to explain rather than to give a rigid procedure for every possible situation. In the case of fire discipline a set of rules have been devised to allow an officer calling for fire to indicate to the Gun Position Officer exactly what he requires of the guns, to suit a particular set of circumstances. There are many ways of bringing fire to bear on a target, but it is only by a clear under- standing of the technical problems involved, allied to the tactical situation and the time available that will permit a reasonable and effective solution to be found. To simplify explanation, the pamphlet has been divided into chapters under various headings, but the volume must be read as a whole and no one chapter can be entirely divorced from any other. The successful application of gunnery methods in the field depends not on rigid rules but on a grasp of general principles applied in a simple and commonsense practical manner.”   This will be sent via Royal Mail 1st class signed for and dispatched within two working days.
