    About this item

An original Royal Air Force officer's service dress suit which was made in 1945 for 201405 Frederick Percy Batchelor who served with the RAF Technical Branch during the Second World War. Batchelor was gazetted in November 1945 meaning he was made an officer at some point around the end of the war which is almost certainly when he had this suit made.

The tunic is made from the standard RAF blue grey coloured barathea wool and features brass King's crown buttons throughout as well as a brass waist belt buckle. There are two rings of rank braid to each cuff which denote the rank of FLight Lieutenant. They are slightly mis-matched which shows the second ring was added after promotion. Inside the tunic is fully lined in rayon and features a single interior pocket. There is no label but the trousers retain their label which identifies the maker.

The trousers are typical of the period featuring a high rise waist and twin pleated front. Nice details include the ticket pocket at the waistband and waist adjusters. The fly fastens with buttons as is standard with British clothing during this period and there are more buttons positioned around the waist to which braces can be attached. Inside the trousers the original maker's label is still present and bear's the maker's name of 'Bailey & Weatherill'. The original owners name is also present as is the date which is most likely 1945.

The uniform will suit around a 34" chest. Below are some measurements taken with the uniform laid flat -

    Jacket
    Chest - 18 1/2"
    Waist - 15"
    Inside arm - 17 3/4"
    Outside arm - 24 1/2"
    Shoulders - 16 1/2"
    Length at back - 30"

    Trousers
    Waist: 14"
    Rise - 13 1/2"
    Rear rise - 17 1/2"
    Inside leg: 31"
    Outside leg - 44 1/2"
    Cuff - 9 3/4"

The overall condition of this set is good with signs of wear and age. It looks to be wearable and displays well with no major flaws. Please take time to study these and bear in mind that this is a vintage uniform which was worn during WW2 and has some small flaws commensurate with age and use.

A nice original WW2 period officer's suit in good condition.
