THE SEAFORTH HIGHLANDERS
(Ross-shire Buffs. The Duke of Albany's) (72nd Foot and 78th Foot)
Raised as separate regiments in 1778, a long period of arduous service was passed in India and South Africa, where its earliest battle honours were won. At the Battle of Assave the Regiment won a third colour, called "The Elephant Colour." It is one of the few regiments that has seen active service in Persia, and has several times fought in Afghanistan and on the North-West Frontier. It was at Lucknow in the Mutiny, Egypt in 1882, and in the final battles in the Soudan, besides fighting with credit in South Africa. In the great war on the Continent it was repre- sented by several battalions, all of which added to the high reputation of the Regiment.
