    For sale is a Rare WW2 Period British 8th Army “The Road Home” Publication By General McCreery! This is in good condition.

      The foreword states;   “Foreword by the Army Commander   This is a great day. You are travelling by the overland route home on leave. This leave has been richly earned by you all as victorious veterans of the African and Italian campaigns. Good luck, and a happy time with your families.”   Followed by a facsimile signature of general McCreery.    Guide to the overland route from Austria to England for 8th Army troops travelling home on leave, includes a foldout map and a sketch illustration.   Foreword by General Sir Richard McCreery, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, British Forces of Occupation in Austria.   Background: In WW2, the British 8th Army fought across North Africa and then through Italy. After the end of the war, it ended its days by being redesignated British Forces in Austria, controlling the British forces occupying part of that country. This booklet was issued to soldiers returning home on leave. The troops were nicknamed 'D-Day Dodgers'.   More information: There is a British Pathe News film entitled 'Austria to Charing Cross telling the story of two soldiers traveling the overland route home.
