About this item

For sale is a WW2 Home Guard Mustering In Emergency Order Great Western Railway.

This document states the following;   “Great western railway    Road motor engineers department    Aldermaston station   18th august 1943    Home guard mustering in emergency   This is to certify that Lar. A. G. Sandmann , a member of the Company's Staff enrolled in the 102nd Battery Z.A.A., Bristol. Banalion, tomer will, in an emergency, be required to carry on with his railway duties until the Company release him, in order that the Company may be in a position to operate the Railway, and is. therefore, in List ii (vide Home Guard Regulation 8c).   Signed by the unit commander and chief officer.”   It simply confirms to anyone who may otherwise challenge him that mr a g sandmann of GWR company staff is enrolled in 102nd battery Z.A.A Aldermaston of the HOME GUARD and will in an emergency be still required to continue his GWR duties until he can be released! This was not however a snub to the military, but the reflection that the railways themselves were vital to the success of the War effort and at times, its needs were paramount. Its tell-tale folds show Sandmann kept it in a uniform pocket for immediate ready access! A very rare and remarkable surviving relic of WW2.   Aldermaston railway station serves the village of Aldermaston in Berkshire, England. The station is at nearby Aldermaston Wharf and about 2 miles (3 km) north of Aldermaston village. It is 44 miles 63 chains (44.79 miles, 72.08 km) measured from London Paddington.   This is in good condition.    This will be sent via Royal Mail 1st class signed for and dispatched within two working days.
