1942 Dated Australian Flying Suit

RAAF khaki Cotton Drill Summer Weight Flying Suit following closely the design of the British Sidcot Suit and intended for wear by aircrew being trained under The Empire Air Training Scheme (EATS) in Australia, a policy designed to train Royal Australian Air Force pilots for eventual transfer into the Royal Air Force during World War II. The policy, dubbed the Empire Air Training Scheme in Australia, was envisioned after the British Empire was unable to supply enough pilots and aircraft for the Royal Air force. In Australia the scheme would eventually branch out and provide the training of pilots for deployment in the Pacific War.

The suit is one piece, with a button opening from crutch to collar. Above the waist the closure is offset to the right, forming a flap on which is sewn a large diagonal patch pocket for the storage of maps. There is also a large patch pocket on each thigh. Waist adjustment is by a rear half-belt with a chromed buckle. Cuffs at wrist and ankle are adjusted by button closures, those at the ankles having 15 cm fabric tabs. A large fold down collar is fastened at the neck by a hook and eye and may be turned up for weather protection. When the collar is turned up, a pair of fabric tabs with chromed buckles stitched to the underside may be used to fasten it.

A white cotton label printed in black ink is sewn inside at the neck. It reads N91 1942 SIZE 2, MADE IN AUSTRALIA'.

The final image shows trainee pilots of No. 5 course EATS meeting Noel Coward at No.3 Elementry Flying Training School. All are wearing this type of Flying Suit.
