About this item

A good WW2 British Tank Suit dated 1944.

Officially termed the Oversuit, Tank Crews these distinctive suits were also known as “Pixie Suits”, “Zoot Suits”, and "Goon Suits" during the war.

Made of strong padded canvas with multiple pockets the Suit had two full length access zips and a detachable hood for extreme weather. Specially designed to keep the wearer warm and dry they were field-tested during Exercise Dracula in late 1943 and first issued in the autumn of 1944.

Though typical attire for British tank crews during the campaign in northwest Europe during the winter of 1944/45 production problems meant supply was always behind demand. Until production caught up initial issue was only for the tank's drivers, gunners and commanders, their seats deemed to be the draughtiest. Scarcity of issue meant the Suits were not easily replaced if damaged, this leading to recorded incidents of the popular Suits continuing to be worn with a broken zip sewn shut, access being gained through the remaining zip. It also doubled as a basic sleeping bag.

Th Suit is in good condition albeit a bit grubby from service wear and presently having one full length broken zip on the right side.  Others appear stiff or will not move so I have not interfered with them.

The detachable extreme weather hood is absent, but the Suit retains all it’s external and internal straps and its press studs function well.

To the inside right there is a manufacturers label showing the Suit to be a good Size 4 with a clear 1944 date.  height 5'9" Breast

Perhaps best considered as an entry level example, I have hopefully priced it as such but it does display well as it is.
