About this item

A very nice WW1 Scottish Cuff Rank Doublet Tunic with Divisional Insignia and attribution to Captain Main of the Royal Scots Regiment.

Tailored in fine khaki gabardine wool the Doublet has its full complement of brass Royal Scots buttons and to each lapel bronze collar badges of the Royal Scots. These have a small bronze letter “T” below them denoting a Territorial battalion.

The traditional gauntlet cuffs each bear double chevron tape and three cloth pips for the rank of Captain, with then originally applied to each upper arm lovely cloth formation signs for the 52nd Lowland Division.

Sewn to the left breast are silk medal ribbons for the WW1 British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

To the inside the Doublet is lined throughout in tan raw silk with applied to the back of the neck a Scottish tailor's label showing the name of Captain Main and a February 1918 date.

The Doublet is in very good service worn condition overall with no moth, nicely executed repair (25mm) and wear at the armpits.

The 52nd Lowland Division landed in France in April 1918 and fought on the Western Front for the remainder of the War.

It took part in the following battles there in 1918:

The Battle of Albert

The Battle of the Scarpe

The Battle of the Drocourt_Queant Line

The Battle of the Canal du Nord

and

The Final Advance in Artois

In the 52nd Lowland Division there were at that time two Battalions of the Royal Scots, these were the 4th and 7th Battalions, both of which were Territorial.

Captain Main fought with one of these.

A good untouched doublet, worthy of further research.
