About this item
An original copy of the inspirational letter by Eisenhower as the supreme commander of Operation Overlord, the Allied invasion of Normandy, for distribution to the “Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen of the Allied Expeditionary Force” prior to D Day.
Now very collectable in their own right what make this example exceptionally rare, if not unique, is the circular document stamp in the lower right hand corner:
“Central Base Section, S.O.S, ETO, USA”
Accompanied by a uniform removed SHAEF (Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force) formation sign, both were originally obtained from the Mayor of Pine Buff Arkansas.
The Services of Supply (SOS), European Theatre of Operations (ETO), was established in Cheltenham, England on 24 May 1942 under the command of Major General John C. H. Lee. Almost two years of build up followed, supporting the North African Campaign and eventually the Invasion of Normandy. They were responsible for the supply and logistics of everything needed in support of the invasion, including of course these letters. Whilst I can only speculate, it is possible this letter is an original proof copy or merely one retained by the SOS for their records
The command was redesignated COMZ (Communications Zone) after the 6 June 1944 invasion and continued its responsibilities throughout the war.
Both are in very good condition, the paper having darkened slightly having been displayed in a frame for many years.
