About this item
An original Royal Air Force B Type Helmet which was made in 1939 and is a size No. 3.
The B-Type flying helmet came into use with the RAF during the 1930s and became synonymous with the Battle of Britain. This example is still as it would have been from the factory so doesn't have any ears fitted. The earpieces were supplied separately and fitted to the helmets at squadron level. Early British Airborne training photos show this pattern of helmet being worn (see attached pictures).
This particular B-type is in good condition. The leather exterior is in good shape and has no nicks or tears. There are some signs of age and some white spot marks which may clean off. The brass press studs located to each cheek are still present and are missing some of the painted finish to the exterior which suggests that the helmet was used. Both 'bennetts' buckles are intact and in good condition as are the leather straps and the leather cover securing ring that work with this.
The interior of the helmet is lined with chamois leather and is in good condition with some signs of wear and use. The original label is also still present and bears the maker's name of 'G. Waddington & Son Ltd'. The 1939 date is also present as is the size of 3 which is intended to fit a size 7 1/8 to 7 3/8 head.
A good original example with a nice early date.
