About this item

An original pair of British Army Denim Battledress Trousers dated 1946 and in a size No. 6.

This pattern of trousers came into issue with the British Army during the Second World War and remained standard issue well into the 1950s. These trousers were used for fatigues and are made from a green denim sanforized cotton, typical of that used for workwear in the mid century period. Based on the serge battledress design, these trousers feature a map pocket to the left leg, a first field dressing pocket to the right hip and slash pockets in the usual place in each side seam. They are cut with a high rise and wide leg as were all men's clothes during this period.

This particular pair still retain their original manufacturer's label to the exterior of the seat. It bears a rare maker's name which is rarely encountered today of 'Classic MFG. Co (Well St) London', which incredibly is the same street the Blighty Studio is on! It also states the year as 1946 and the size as No. 6 which is designed to fit someone with a 34-35" waist and 31" inside leg. It is important to remember that these are designed to fit over the wool battledress trousers so need to be worn oversize for an authentic fit. When laid flat they measure -

Waist - 19"
Rise - 16 1/2"
Rear rise - 19 1/2"
Inside leg - 31 1/2"
Outside leg - 44 1/2"
Cuff - 9 1/4"

The trousers are in reasonable condition for their age with some signs of wear and use. There is some staining, mainly to the front of the legs as well as a small hole to the knee of the right leg.. The left leg has a period repair and there is another repair next to the dressing pocket. These are detailed in the pictures so please take time to study them and bear in mind that these are a pre-worn pair of 1940s work trousers which may have other small issues consummate with their vintage.

An original pair of immediate post-war dated trousers in a good size and with a nice clear label.
