About this item
An original British Airborne 1959 Pattern Denison Smock dating from the 1960s.
This pattern of smock still retains a lot of design features first seen on the original Denison smock which was produced during the Second World War. It features four patch pockets to the front which fasten with nickel plated 'Newey' branded press studs as well as tabs near to the bottom hem which also fasten with the same press studs. The original fishtail is also still present to the smock and the front fastens with its original 'NZ' branded zipper which is typical of the zips used during this period.
The camouflage print is the 1966 pattern which is often referred to as 'Banana', 'Sinai' or 'blood cake' by collectors today. It is a very bright pattern which stands out when compared to other patterns of denison smocks produced in the 20th Century. The deep yellowish colour of the backing contrasts against the brown tones and the green is very sparse in this print. It has become one of the most sought-after patterns of denison today due to its association with the Northern Ireland conflict.
The smock belonged to an officer in the parachute regiment who had it tailored for his son. The arms and the body have been tailored-in as is evident in the pictures. There is no label inside the smock which was potentially removed when the alterations were done. A spurious 1944 date stamp has also been added at some stage.
When laid flat the smock measures -
Chest - 24"
Inside arm - 15"
Outside arm - 20"
Shoulders - 21"
Length at rear - 30 1/2"
The smock is in very good condition as can be seen in the pictures. It shows only limited signs of wear and age and is still totally wearable. The camouflage colours are still bold and bright with no signs of sun fading or laundering. Please study the pictures before purchasing and bear in mind that this is a vintage item which has some small flaws commensurate with age.
A nice original example in a highly desirable camouflage print.
This is a vintage item which is 'sold as seen'
