About this item
An original United States Army Air Force A-3 Mechanics cap in deadstock, unworn condition.
This pattern of cap was introduced during the Second World War and was intended to be issued to groundcrews of the USAAF. The design is based on 'ball' caps of the same era and they proved highly popular throughout the conflict.
The cap is made from a green coloured herringbone twill material and features a six panel construction. Each panel is reinforced inside with a piece of white coloured HBT cotton tape. The hat features a large, stitched peak which allows it to be worn flipped in an upward position, as seen in many period photographs. The Army Air Force black ink stamp is present to both the exterior and interior and both are still bright and bold.
The original label is present inside the cap and bears the title of 'Type A-3' below which is the specification number 'Spec. No. 6-287-A' and the size of 7 1/8. The 1942 date is present in the order number and below this is the maker's name of 'Ashley Hats, Inc'. There is also an ANJ stamp applied to the label.
The hat is in fantastic condition which could be described as 'deadstock' or 'unworn'. It has clearly never been worn and is in fantastic condition which would be very hard to better.
A fine example of this classic pattern of US military cap!
This is a vintage item which is 'sold as seen'
