About this item

An original pair of Royal Air Force Type F sunglasses which date from the immediate post Second World War period.

Officially designated 'Spectacles Anti-Glare Type F', this pattern of sunglasses was introduced in the late 1940s. They remain identical to wartime issue Type VIII Sunglasses but feature a new stores designation and eventually an updated metal case, as seen with these examples.

The glasses are the classic 'aviator' shape and feature chrome plated rims and arms with sprung wrap-around ear pieces. They have green tinted lenses of a very high quality which are still very clear and usable today. The inside of one arm bears the War Department broad arrow marking, the designation 'MK VIII' and the RAF stores code of 22G /1108 which denotes these as a size large is also present. The maker's initials of 'HCO' are marked to the inside of the bridge.

The glasses are in good, used condition with only limited signs of age and use. The arms function as they should  and the lenses are good and clear although could use some cleaning. The chrome frames are also fine with some signs of age, tanishing and wear to the plated parts. It is important to remember that these are a pair of pre-owned, vintage sunglasses which have been used previously.

Finally is the original case which is still intact and usable with some signs of wear and age. The top features markings which include the War Department broad arrow marking and the 22G/1108 reference number and the size of large.

The glasses are in good condition with some signs of age and wear. The lenses are good and the arms aren't overly loose. One arm has had the screw raplced with a piece of locking wire by the original RAF owner who was a lightning pilot. This works well but has been reflected with a lower price.

A nice pair of original MK VIII sunglasses from the post-war period.

This is a vintage item which is 'sold as seen'
