About this item
An original Second World War Officers Greatcoat which belonged to a Royal Engineers officer, 151785 D G Mead. He was a 2nd Lieutenant in 1940 and made the rank of Captain by 1944 when he was mentioned in dispatches whilst serving in Burma.
This pattern of coat was used for many years by British Officers from the time of the Great War all the way through to the 1950s. This particular example has all the hallmarks of a WW2 period example. It is made from a heavy khaki melton wool fabric and lined with rayon. It features two flapped pockets to the outside and a half belt to the rear. The coat is fitted with brass kings crown Royal Engineers buttons and there is evidence of where rank stars were fitted to each epaulette.
Inside the coat the original label is still present and bears the maker's name of 'J. W. Dore' and the address of 18 Sackville Street, Piccadilly W.1. The owner's name has been added in ink as well as the date of 4th September 1940.
The coat is a small to medium size which will fit around a 38" - 39" chest depending on desired fit. When laid flat it measures -
Chest - 22"
Inside arm - 18 3/4"
Outside arm - 26 1/2"
Shoulders - 18"
Length - 50 1/2"
The coat is in very good condition for its age with some signs of wear and use. There is no serious damage that I can find and overall it displays very well indeed. Please take time to study the pictures before purchasing and bear in mind that it is a vintage, pre-owned item which may have small issues consummate with its age.
A nice original officers greatcoat in good condition which has wartime provenance and the potential for further research.
This is a vintage item which is 'sold as seen'
