About this item
An original WW2 RAF D-type Tropical flying helmet in good condition which is a size No. 3.
This pattern of flying helmet was introduced in the first half of the Second World War for use in the tropics. These helmets saw use in the Far East and Middle East with the RAF and Coastal Command. They all saw more limited use with the USAAF.
The helmet is made from a khaki coloured cotton drill material and is lined with an off-white satin. The pattern closely follows the second pattern C-type helmet with rubber receiver earcups and elasticated chin strap. A neck flap is also present to keep the sun off the wearer's neck and is specific to the D type pattern. This helmet features three leather goggle straps which fasten with metal press studs. A version with five straps was introduced towards the end of the war which confirms this example as a wartime made helmet.
The helmet is fitted with the correct pattern of receivers which both bear the Air Ministry 'AM' marking and they appear to be original to the helmet. There is also an internal wiring loom which has been fitted outside of the helmet. Judging by the age shown on the rubber receiver cups (one of which is slightly perished as shown in picture 7) it has always been wired in this manner.
Inside the helmet the original size marking is still present and states the size as No. 3 which is intended to fit a 7 1/8 to 7 3/8 size head.
The helmet is in good condition overall and displays well with some soiling from sweat etc. The rubber ear cups are good, save for issue with the right hand one previously mentioned. All the straps are complete and work as is the chin strap. The lining is worn as is common with these tropical helmets but not as much as is often encountered.
All in all a nice example of a D Type helmet which would make a great addition to any collection.
This is a vintage item which is 'sold as seen'
