About this item
A scarce original N.A.A.F.I women's rubberised raincoat which dates from the Second World War.
This coat was produced specifically for women serving with the The Navy, Army and Air Force Institutes which is a company created by the British government on 9 December 1920 to run recreational establishments needed by the British Armed Forces, and to sell goods to servicemen and their families. It was quite likely produced for those employed outdoors such as on tea car's, N.A.A.F.I wagons and similar.
The coat is made from a rubberised canvas as was popular during the mid Century period for rainwear. It is cut in a typical style for the era which was used for both civilian and military raincoats. The coat features a double breasted front and angled pockets to the hips. Straps are fitted to each cuff which can be adjusted by means of a leather covered metal buckle. There are also metal eyelets fitted under each arm to aid in ventilation and the rear features a single vent. Epaulettes are located to each shoulder which are fastened in place with a button. The coat would have originally featured a matching waist belt which is no longer present.
Inside the coat there is evidence of where the original labels were originally glued into the coat. With time the glue has dried out leading to the labels coming off. It has however been stenciled with the words 'Property of N.A.A.F.I' which confirms this as being a genuine NAAFI item.
The coat will suit around a 34" bust depending on desired fit and when laid flat it measures -
Chest - 40"
Inside arm - 18 1/2"
Outside arm - 23 1/2"
Shoulders - 17"
Length at rear - 42"
The coat is in good condition with signs of wear and age. There is staining and discolouration but on the whole it is sound and is still nice and pliable. There is also a small hole to the left shoulder which is illustrated in picture 11. Please take time to study the pictures and bear in mind that it is a vintage, pre-worn item which may have small flaws commensurate with age.
