Original WW2 RAF D Type Electrically Heated Gauntlets - Size 8 1/2

An original pair of Second World War Royal Air Force electrically heated Type D flying gauntlet linings.

These are a pair of Type D electric flying gauntlet linings, intended for use inside the standard RAF Type D leather gauntlets and worn in conjunction with the wired 1941 pattern Sidcot flying suit. They form part of the RAF’s electrically heated flying clothing system developed to combat extreme cold at high altitude during wartime operations.

The linings are manufactured from stockinette fleece, to which the electrical heating element is sewn. The element itself is encased within flameproof cotton fleece material, and the ends of the heating element are riveted to press stud fasteners positioned at the cuff, allowing connection to the aircraft’s electrical system. The linings are fitted with a black silk/rayon outer shell, which is correct for this pattern and period.

Both linings retain their original Air Ministry labels stitched to the cuffs. The markings include the Air Ministry crown which confirms that they were made in 1944 or earlier. The size is also marked as size 8 ½ and the RAF Stores code of 22C/714 and 22c/717 is marked to each glove.

The gauntlet linings are in good vintage condition overall. The black outer material shows light wear consistent with age and service use. The stockinette fleece lining remains largely intact but does show some limited moth grazing in places. The Air Ministry labels remain legible and securely attached. Please study the photographs carefully before purchase and bear in mind that this is a vintage, pre-owned item which may show small flaws commensurate with age and wartime use.
