About this item
A scarce and completely inert, first pattern WW1 German Pigeon Mortar Fragmentation Round, the later pattern being cylindrical in shape.
No doubt ground recovered, it remains in good repainted condition and is fitted with a very good quality reproduction fuse.
Used with the German Granatenwerfer 16 (or Wurfgranate 15) trench mortar, nicknamed "pigeon" or "turtledove" (Taube) due to the whirring sound it made, similar to a pigeon’s wings, while flying.
It had a range of 55 to 328 yards and was effective against infantry in trenches.
