About this item
A very good and completely inert example of the WW1 German M17 Stick Grenade.
Overall condition is very good the head retaining a good degree of its original finish and with the sprung belt fitting still in place. The wooden shaft is sound and without worm damage, the makers initials and fuse time nicely stamped into the wood.
In 1917 the German began to replace the Ammonium Nitrate (high explosive) used in the M1915 and M1916 Stielhandgranate with Trinitrotoluene (TNT). The result was the M1917 Stielhandgranate which although it had a smaller canister and was lighter, the blast even more devastating than the previous models.
Having realised the smooth base cap was sometimes difficult to unscrew, a new star shaped piece was riveted to the bottoms of the screw caps to facilitate easy removal, even with gloves.
